Wilderness Survival

Trainer: Mike Payne – Retired US Army Special Forces operator and instructor

Registration: This event is only open to club members and there is a limit of 30 attendees so we do ask that you register. Please e-mail Frank Ribaudo at [email protected] if you plan to attend. There is no fee, but donations to the club are appreciated.

Course Details: This training is about imparting a mindset. Survival Mindset is the single most important aspect, yet it is the only aspect that cannot be taught, it has to come from within. Introduction to Wilderness Survival presents anecdotes to illustrate how attitude (aka survival mindset) was a critical factor in survival against almost impossible odds, while at the same time stressing key points in how proper preparation, planning, signaling, etc. could have contributed to better real-world survival outcomes within the US.

The emphasis of this class is on short-term survival (less than 72 hours) and its focus consists of:

  • Survival Mindset
  • 5 Basic Needs
  • Basic Navigation (Map, Compass, and GPS)
  • Wilderness Trauma and First Aid
  • Signaling

Subject areas being discussed include:

  • Survival Kits
  • Maps & Compasses
  • Personal Locator Beacons
  • iPhone compass apps
  • First Aid Kits
